This innovative programme will provide students with valuable insights into governance, risk and compliance and an organisational understanding of financial services in Ireland using current market thinking and relevant best practice from regulators and industry. The need for this area of study is supported by the trends that indicate a higher standard of “demonstrable compliance with financial services regulations”.
The programme objectives are to facilitate learners to gain knowledge and experience of:
- Key concepts and theories in managing a financial services entity
- An understanding of the financial services industry
- Governance best practice in Financial Services
- Appreciation of the three lines of defence in managing a risk function
How does it help my career?
The Expert Group of Future Skills Needs (2024) project that the financial services sector will need to recruit 6,000-9,000 people by 2027 and close the estimated skills gap for up to 4,000 people. To ensure that the pipeline of staff is available to take advantage of these career opportunities, a level of education is required, especially for those who require fitness and probity approval from the Central bank of Ireland as part of their role.
Careers in financial services encompass a wide range of roles in the risk and compliance functions (“second line of defence”) as well as those with responsibility in regulation and compliance currently working in “first line of defence” roles. The breadth of the course and its focus on first principles means that it is also suitable for accountants seeking a career in internal audit. Ultimately, graduates of this programme will be in a better position to take on “control function” roles in regulated firms in Ireland and have a network of faculty and alumni to lean on as they develop in their careers.
