DL147 - Certificate in Immersive Storytelling

What is Immersive Storytelling?
Are you ready to take your creative skills to another level? Do you want to explore this rapidly evolving technology to leverage the power of immersion and presence into your practice?
Immersive technologies, virtual, augmented and mixed reality can be leveraged in order to add a new dimension to how you tell stories.
Our course is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed without needing previous experience or programming skills.
You will learn about 360 filming/editing, immersive sound, game engines, photogrammetry and about creating compelling stories.
This short course will empower you to immerse your audience within your story and tell it in an innovative way. With practical hands on sessions as well as online tutorials, you can explore these tools. The course will allow you to apply these skills to your own practice. On successful completion, students will receive a Certificate in Professional Skills (Immersive Storytelling) – Level 9, 10 ECTS.
What will I do on the course?
Course content will include:
- Introduction to Storytelling: definition and applications of immersive storytelling, case studies of immersive storytelling in different contexts (film, gaming, cultural heritage)
- Principles of Storytelling: narrative, character and character development, plot, structure and arc, conflict and resolution
- Techniques for World-Building: interactivity, sound, design, perspective, context
- Technologies for Storytelling: Unity, Unreal Engine, VR/AR/XR
- Designing Experiences: games, film, XR, live performance
- Ethics + Social Impact
- Project Development
How will I be assessed?
You will storyboard, design and create an immersive experience to tell your story. Your skills will be showcased through a hands-on project. This is a self-directed collaborative project where students develop concepts and other pre-production elements with a view to creating a final creative output.

The course will be delivered on a blended format as follows:
- Thursday, 14th November | 10am – 4pm | On Campus
- Friday, 15th November | 10am – 4pm | On Campus
- Wednesday, 20th November | 7pm – 9pm | Online
- Friday, 22nd November | Online (Students will book a 1 hour slot with the lecturer between 10am and 4pm)
- Friday, 29th November | 10am – 4pm | On Campus
- Wednesday, 4th December | 7pm – 9pm | Online
- Friday, 13th December | 10am – 1pm | Online or On Campus (Projects Presentation)
Are there any Materials / Equipment requirements?
You will need a computer or laptop capable of running a Unity 3d Editor.
Fees + Scholarships
Fees for this course in 2024/2025 are €550, subsidised by the Higher Education Authority’s Human Capital Initiative. Check your eligibility HERE
Once offered a place on the course, you will be asked to complete a declaration form to confirm your eligibility.
Fees for those who do not meet the eligibility criteria above are €1,100.
