Guest Lecture: Person-Centered Approach Co-Ordinator, St John of God Community Services

Audrey Carroll, Programme Manager, and Edel Kennedy, Person Centred Approach Co-Ordinator, from St John of God Community services gave a very engaging talk to 2nd and 3rd year Applied Psychology students about a person-centered approach when working with clients with intellectual disability.
The guest speakers talked about the 5 guiding principles of A Person-Centered Approach. This talk was organised by Marian McDonnell and Dr Irene Connolly at IADT, who are co-founders of www.letsgoskills.com, at IADT, a research center dedicated to designing accessible instructional technology.
A Person-Centred Approach ensures that each individual is directing, guiding and included in all decisions and actions in relation to them.
Audrey and Edel talked about what we mean by A Life Vision and the power of an ‘Accessible and meaningful life’. The importance of Advocacy and Equality and Human Rights was stressed.
They also talked about full and part time job opportunities with the service. Audrey Carroll, Programme Manager, said that she is very impressed with IADT psychology students and graduates. Some previous graduates have been employed by the service already, and many have availed of part time work opportunities to build up experience for their psychology career.
