IADT welcomes DEIS students for a hands-on Creative Computing and Game Design experience
The event was organised by Creative Computing lecturer Anne Wright, in partnership with the IADT Access Office, and delivered by lecturer John Montayne, Creative Computing graduate Sam Downey, and second-year Creative Computing student Oisín Healy Gelletlie.
Throughout the day, students explored key aspects of Creative Computing, including coding fundamentals, creating digital artwork with code, and designing characters and environments for games. Working in small groups, they gained insight into how programming, digital art and game mechanics come together to create interactive experiences.
The workshop gave students the opportunity to experiment, collaborate and experience IADT’s studio-based approach to learning. Many created their first pieces of generative artwork and began designing simple games — providing a valuable first step into the world of creative technology.
This initiative reflects IADT’s continued commitment to broadening access to higher education and supporting young people from DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) communities. Students attending DEIS schools can face additional barriers to progressing to third-level education, and events like this play an important role in helping them explore new pathways, build confidence, and discover subjects they may not otherwise encounter.
By working closely with the Access Office, IADT ensures that outreach programmes remain purposeful, inclusive and focused on creating genuine opportunities for students from underrepresented backgrounds. Providing hands-on creative computing experiences is one of the many ways the Institute helps widen participation and inspire the next generation of digital creators.
IADT looks forward to welcoming more schools and continuing to support access to education for all learners, regardless of background.
