The Institute of Art, Design + Technology, Dún Laoghaire (IADT), in partnership with Screen Producers Ireland (SPI), will present new research on the Irish factual screen sector at the IFI Documentary Festival on Friday, 12th September 2025.
The event, titled IFI SPOTLIGHT & IADT: The Factual Screen Industry in Conversation will showcase findings from a two-year research project funded by Coimisiún na Meán. The project examines the state of the Irish factual and documentary industries, providing the first comprehensive overview of funding, broadcasting, exhibition opportunities, and working conditions in the sector.
Following the presentation of the report by Dr Judith Pernin, a panel discussion and audience Q&A will take place. Moderated by Rónán Ó Muirthile, Head of Faculty, Film Art and Creative Technologies at IADT, audiences will hear from Steve Carson, RTÉ Director of Video, Roisin Geraghty, Producer and Ross Whitaker, Filmmaker. Audience input will be invited from the floor.
In an era of misinformation, disinformation, and polarised online discourse, the factual and documentary sectors play a vital role in supporting informed citizenship. This research underscores the importance of sustaining a vibrant and diverse factual screen industry that can help audiences understand the world in fair, nuanced, and accurate ways.
This event is a must attend for filmmakers and producers working across documentary and factual screen industries in Ireland and anyone with an interest in factual programming, documentary making and media literacy.
