‘Mythology: Identity’: International Workshop hosted by Visual Communication/Graphic Design
IADT’s partner organisations in this are Aalto University (Helsinki, Finland), ASP Art Academy (Katowice, Poland), VDA Academy of Arts (Vilnius, Lithuania), the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp, Belgium).
The Dublin event, Mythology: Identity, followed workshops in Katowice, Poland (Mythology: Play, April 2022) and Vilnius, Lithuania (Mythology: Spirituality, September 2022). Organised and led by Dr Linda King and Gerard Fox, with support from Rory Bradley, Peter Evers and Dr Tina Kinsella, the workshop team were also delighted to welcome Design for Stage and Screen tutor, Pamela Heaney, who brought some of her students to participate.
After a day of cultural events focused on Irish history, students were asked to research and create a series of digital postcards in response to the values of the EU Charter, specifically: Solidarity, Co-operation and Peace; Equality and Progress; Justice; Respect for Difference; Inclusion; and Sustainability.
Joining them in this exploration was IADT Honorary Fellow Niall Sweeney (and graduate of a previous incarnation of the Graphic Design programme), who shared his vast experience in design, art, performance and advocacy, including his work on the seminal Alternative Miss Ireland pageants (1987-2012). After a week of experimentation and iteration, the student groups revealed their finished works in the beautiful surroundings of the National Museum of Ireland: Archaeology, Kildare Street.
Speaking about the workshop Head of Design and Visual Arts, Dr Tina Kinsella, offered… “We are delighted to welcome our educational partners on the Digital Mythologies project to IADT. This collaborative, interdisciplinary and innovative project provides all educational partners and our students with exciting opportunities to explore shared research, teaching and learning interests and expertise relevant to pertinent and pressing issues that affect identity within a European context. The challenging and insightful work produced by students from the five project partners demonstrate the timeliness and necessity for more educational initiatives such as this project.”
The next workshop entitled Mythology: Forest will take place in Helsinki in December 2023, hosted by Aalto University.
