Towards a Creative Dún Laoghaire – Project Update
Researchers Ella Fitzpatrick and Justyna Doherty, have been conducting a qualitative study to explore ways to build the Creative Economy in Dún Laoghaire. The researchers at IADT are part of the newly launched Public Design Lab which is focussed on providing strategy recommendations
through an ecocentric lens.
Using a variety of participatory design methods, they have engaged with various stakeholders in Dún Laoghaire town and IADT campus to understand what creativity can do for the future. Data has been gathered from the exploratory research interviews, expert panel discussion and week-long workshops.
The research team are meeting this week to conduct a sense-making workshop to derive patterns and themes from the information collected which will help to apply the data in a way that will inform, inspire, and align the project.
Charrette Week
Similar to a design sprint, two teams of students from different courses, worked on challenges associated with imagining the future of Dún Laoghaire. One team used speculative design techniques, while the other group imagined plausible futures. Both teams presented their findings to the DLR county council representatives on the project followed by questions and discussion.
The two workshop challenges were as follows:
Pathways: envisage and propose opportunities to build a sustainable and equitable creative economy with IADT and DLR.
A plausible future scenario using predictive signals of change Horizons: visions of a creative economy in 2047. A speculative design thinking strategy projecting 25 years into the future.
Upcoming Event
The project has an event taking place in the Lexicon Studio in Dún Laoghaire. A presentation of the study to date and discussion will take place from 10:45am on the 25th of October.
Coffee and tea will be provided. If you are interested in this project, we encourage you to join us and participate in this exciting discussion.
