IADT launches new Postgraduate Master of Arts in Media Narratives + Storytelling
Applications are now open for this new MA programme which explores the theory and practice of established and emerging media narratives in written, visual and audio form. The principal area of enquiry is narrative studies and practice, giving students a critical and creative understanding of evolving storytelling patterns through history.
The focus is on short form narratives in contemporary and emerging media platforms, which will form the practical stream of the MA. The theoretical framework for this programme is the field of Narrative Studies. The practice includes but is not limited to podcasts, short videos, short film, creative non-fiction (written and recorded), documentary, spoken word, photo-journalism, screencasts and blogs. Combining the narrative strategies of more traditional media, with the possibilities of new media forms, this MA encourages students to apply experimentation and innovation to their writing and production practice.
The programme equips the students with the technical ability to navigate new media forms and explore their own expression in diverse ways in this creative space. This programme is for people working in the creative and cultural industries who produce content as part of their professional role – this could be a journalist who produces videos for online platforms; people working in cultural organisations such as galleries, theatres or museums who need to develop storytelling skills for a variety of communication platforms; those working in film, art, literary and theatre festivals who produce content as part of their social media communications and online platforms and / or creative professionals (writers; filmmakers; artists) who require skills for professional promotion reasons.
Student will explore narrative traditions, concepts and genres as part of the theoretical thread of the programme, and production techniques, non-fiction narratives and the creative use of archives as part of the practical steam. By the end of this programme, students will have a portfolio of work ready for publication, streaming and exhibition.
Facilitating people working full-time and / or people living outside Dublin, this programme combines remote and in-person study with two online evenings each week and one on-campus intensive day every four weeks.
‘This much-needed MA in Media Narratives and Storytelling will be greatly valued by published authors who increasingly require an online presence to promote their work and lack the skills to provide it.’ Derek Landy, author of Skulduggery Pleasant Series, (HarperCollins: 2007-2014).
‘This unique course will provide students with invaluable training on how to convert their abilities into a range of imaginative narrative forms. There is a wealth of untapped, original material in Irish archives that is ripe for creative use in visual and literary formats. This MA will be welcomed by creative students and professionals alike and provide them with the necessary skills to break into new markets in a stimulating environment.’ Dr. Barbara Hughes, author of Between Literature and History: The Diaries and Memoirs of Mary Leadbeater and Dorothea Herbert (Reimagining Ireland Palgrave: 2010).
