Nothing to Declare? An exhibition commissioned by the Irish Aviation Authority for Culture Night

The Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) are working with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) on an exhibition of work from the BA Hons Art programme at IADT. Curated by Dr Tina Kinsella, Head of Department of Design and Visual Arts at IADT, this group exhibition showcases the work of student and graduate artists from the institute.

The exhibition takes place in the new Air Traffic Control Tower at Dublin Airport. This will be the only time the tower is open to the public before it becomes operational early 2020.

The four works on show reflect upon the themes of technology, futurity and landscape. Set in a post-apocalyptic near future where Earth has become unfit for life due to overpopulation, climate change and excess waste, Zsofi Abel’s work considers the relationship between nature, technology and humanity.

Lana May Fleming’s piece similarly meditates on the relationship between the human being and technology in a digital and infinitely networked age where self-monitoring behaviour is the new norm.

Luke van Gelderen’s work responds directly to the contemporary mores of social media. Reflecting on intersubjective encounters between users of a popular video chat site, his piece explores how strangers relate to each other in an increasingly technically mediated world.

Rory Malone’s piece explores breath and heat as metaphors for physical and spatial intimacy between two people by way of using Schlieren imaging technology which is most commonly used in aerodynamics and the construction of airplane wings.

Tickets for this partnership with the Irish Aviation Authority at Culture Night sold out in record time.
