It is not unusual to hold concerns about saying or doing the 'wrong' thing when seeking to support another person. It can be helpful to remember that often your family member will need your listening presence rather than any specific advice you may offer.
Often what holds family members back from expressing concern about a family member’s mental health is the fear of saying the wrong thing. This fear is understandable however there is no one right way to express concern to your family member.
It could be beneficial to rehearse how you might express your concern. It could be helpful also to remember key components of empathy and active listening.
