I am concerned that my friend may be feeling suicidal
Any indication or expression of suicidality must be taken very seriously and responded to appropriately. Your friend will need to engage with a professional support service.
If you are concerned that your friend/peer is having suicidal thoughts, they need immediate, specialist support.
If you know of an immediate, active threat to their life, phone 999 and ask for an Ambulance. If you are with them, stay with them until the ambulance personnel arrive.
For otherwise specialist suicide-specific support, Pieta are the national suicide prevention support service. Pieta services are available to the suicidal person and also to the friends/family of the suicidal person.
Pieta’s 24-hour hour crisis helpline at 1800 247 247 or text ‘HELP’ to 51444 are each available 24/7 – to the person or to the concerned persons.
Pieta also provide specialist services to those experiencing ongoing suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm who are not presently in a the immediate danger of suicidal crisis.
Pieta will provide in-person counselling therapy. The Pieta therapy service serves those experiencing suicidal thoughts, thoughts of self-harm, and also provides support to those bereaved by suicide.
