IADT + 1916 – Sherwood Foresters’ Regiment Exhibition 26th April 2016
The Sherwood Foresters were one of the British Regiments called to reinforce troops during Easter Week, 1916. The 7th and 8thBattalions landed at Kingstown/Dún Laoghaire harbour.
Many were new recruits so inexperienced at military manoeuvres that they thought they were in France. History records that the Officers dined at St George’s Yacht Club on arrival. The regiment camped out atCarriglea Park Industrial School, now theDun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT), for two nights, before marching into Dublin city centre where they were ambushed at Mount Street Bridge on 26 April 1916. 31 Sherwood Foresters were killed and some of them were buried in Grangegorman Military Cemetery, Deansgrange and other cemeteries in Dublin.
This small exhibition at IADT seeks to re-establish the links between the Sherwood Foresters and Dún Laoghaire by showcasing some memorabilia and artefacts about the Sherwood Forester’s in April 1916. A show reel exploring the role of the Sherwood Foresters in the Events of 1916 (including students’ work) will be shown.
Time: from 2pm
Location: Atrium building (area in front of student restaurant)

Bhí na Sherwood Foresters ar cheann de Reisimintí na Breataine a gaireadh chun na trúpaí a atreisiú i rith Sheachtain na Cásca, 1916. Tháinig an 7ú agus an 8ú Cathlán i dtír ag cuan Dhún Laoghaire.
Earcaithe nua a bhí in go leor díobh a raibh an oiread sin d’easpa taithí acu ar ghnásanna míleata gur cheap siad go raibh siad sa Fhrainc. De réir na staire, chuaigh na hOifigigh chun dinnéir ag Club Luamhaireachta Ríoga Naomh Seoirse ar theacht i dtír dóibh. Champáil an reisimint ag Scoil Saothair Pháirc na Carraige Léithe, a bhfuil campas Institiúid Ealaíne, Deartha agus Teicneolaíochta Dhún Laoghaire tagtha ina hionad anois, ar feadh dhá oíche sular mháirseáil siad isteach go lár Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath, áit a ndearnadh luíochán orthu ag Droichead Shráid an Mhóta an 26 Aibreán 1916. Maraíodh 31 saighdiúir de chuid na Sherwood Foresters and cuireadh cuid díobh i Reilig Mhíleata Ghráinseach Ghormáin, Reilig Ghráinseach an Déin agus i reiligí eile i mBaile Átha Cliath.
Lorgaíonn an taispeántas beag seo ag Institiúid Ealaíne, Deartha agus Teicneolaíochta Dhún Laoghaire chun na ceangail a athbhunú a bhí idir na Sherwood Foresters agus Dún Laoghaire trí roinnt earraí cuimhneacháin agus déantán a thaispeáint faoi na Sherwood Foresters in Aibreán 1916.
