Southside Travellers Action Group TASK Programme Visit IADT
The day began where all good days do – with food! The students of the TASK Programme, which is a QQI Level 4 in Employment Skills, started with a cosy lunch in IADTs student canteen and a guide as to how their visit would go from Lifelong Learning Officer Louisa Keogh. Following a brief stop into the launch of the ‘Punks Listen’ zine with IADT Lecturer Dr Michael Murphy, the group settled in the Library for an information session and demonstration ahead of their tour.
With Louisa, the group heard about RPL as an access pathway to higher education. RPL works to make everyday learning ‘visible’ by mapping the skills learned to the programme that they apply for. This includes work experience, volunteering, certified training and formal qualifications. Deirdre discussed the importance of access routes to college and how IADT welcomes and encourages students from all backgrounds and experiences to join us for study. The importance of choosing a field that you enjoy was a running theme throughout the visit.
Tertiary Co-ordinator Sinéad gave an overview of tertiary opportunities at IADT and introduced IADT Lecturer Robert Griffin, who lectures on BA [Hons] Immersive Media Production, a Level 8 tertiary degree co-delivered by IADT, Bray Institute of Further Education and Ballyfermot Institute of Education. Rob provided an exciting overview of the programme, demonstrating the innovative and exciting work done on this course with the 360-degree camera and virtual reality headset. The students got to try out both gadgets in this engaging session while learning about the opportunities presented to them in this tertiary programme.
IADTs N-TUTORR Student Champions Morgan Lynch (Applied Psychology), Jasmin Lobos (Television) and Aoibhin O Byrne (Television) then led the TASK students on a tour of the campus. Walking through the Atrium and the Chapel, Morgan talked about the kinds of exciting projects that are involved in the Applied Psychology programme, highlighting the career pathways that are available upon graduation. The tour then went on to the Animation studio, where lecturer David Quin chatted with the students and invited them to walk through the colourful studio for a browse of the exciting work being done by our students. The tour made a stop into the National Film School sound room where Jasmin and Aoibhin described the projects and equipment that they work with and on, before finishing up in the TV studio itself with lecturer David Cooper. The TASK students got to see the TV students in action and thoroughly enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the busy campus.
“I am so glad that we got to go on a tour of the campus and see what goes on – it is very exciting” – STAG Supervisor.
This event was organised by Lifelong Learning Officer Louisa Keogh in collaboration with Tertiary Co-ordinator Sinéad McEntee and Access Officer Deirdre Walsh.
