IADT + 1916 – Virtual Worlds Collide: Carriglea Park, 1916 – 2–4 pm, Tuesday March 15th
Contested Memories: The Battle of Mount Street Bridge project employs spatial and temporal methods to create a virtual world visualisation of the events of The Battle of Mount Street Bridge. The project aimed to create a virtual model of the area in which the battle took place as a means of helping researchers visualize the conflict. The Contested Memories project is a collaboration between researchers at An Foras Feasa, the Humanities Institute at Maynooth University, Trinity College Dublin, the Humanities Virtual World Consortium, and the Andrew W Mellon Foundation.
‘IS Complex’ explores the history of the Carriglea Park Industrial School, Dun Laoghaire (1894-1954), by creating a Virtual Reality (VR) space that re-maps theIndustrialSchool and its narratives. The work draws on archival material, including written and oral accounts of those who spent time at the school, and also by the local community. The project brought together humanities research on new subjectivities, institutional memory, dramaturgy, and scenography using immersive CAVE and immersive VR technologies. IS Complex was supported by the Spatial Arts and Visualisation project; a collaboration between University College Dublin, National College of Art and Design and Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, and financially supported by the Higher Education Authority.
When Virtual Worlds Collide presents both projects and discusses their shared history in April 1916 when the Sherwood Foresters, camped out on the grounds of Carriglea Park Industrial School prior to marching into the Battle of Mount Street Bridge. We will also present work-in-progress by the students of 3D Design, Model making & Digital Art who are visualising the encampment for its centenary.

Úsáideann an tionscadal Cuimhní Conspóideacha: Cath Dhroichead Shráid an Mhóta (‘Contested Memories: The Battle of Mount Street Bridge’) modhanna spásúla agus ama chun léirshamhlú domhain fhíorúil a chruthú d’imeachtaí Chath Dhroichead Shráid an Mhóta. Bhí de chuspóir an tionscadail samhail fhíorúil den cheantar inar thit an cath amach a chruthú mar bhealach chun cabhrú le taighdeoirí an choimhlint a léirshamhlú. Comhoibriú is ea an tionscadal ‘Cuimhní Conspóideacha’ idir taighdeoirí ag An Foras Feasa, Dámh na nDaonnachtaí ag Ollscoil na hÉireann, Má Nuad, Coláiste na Tríonóide, Baile Átha Cliath, Cuibhreannas Domhain Fhíorúil na nDaonnachtaí, agus Fondúireacht Andrew W Mellon.
Fiosraíonn ‘IS Complex’ stair Scoil Saothair Pháirc na Carraige Léithe, Dún Laoghaire (1894-1954), trí spás Réaltachta Fíorúla (RF) a chruthú a dhéanann athmhapáil ar an Scoil Saothair agus na scéalta a bhain léi. Tá an saothar bunaithe ar ábhar cartlainne, cuntais scríofa agus ó bhéal araon orthu siúd a chaith am ag an scoil, agus ón bpobal áitiúil, chomh maith. Rinne an tionscadal taighde daonnachtaí ar shuibiachtúlacht nua, cuimhne institiúide, cóiriú drámaí, agus radharcagrafaíocht a thabhairt le chéile agus leas á bhaint as teicneolaíochtaí tumthacha CAVE agus RF. Thacaigh tionscadal na nEalaíon Spásúil agus Léirshamhlaithe le IS Complex; ar comhoibriú é seo idir Ollscoil na hÉireann, Baile Átha Cliath, Institiúid Ealaíne, Deartha agus Teicneolaíochta Dhún Laoghaire, agus thug an tÚdarás um Ard-Oideachas tacaíocht airgeadais dó.
Cuireann When Virtual Worlds Collide an dá thionscadal i láthair anuas ar phlé a dhéanamh ar a gcomhstair in Aibreán 1916, tráth a champáil na Sherwood Foresters ar thailte Scoil Saothair Pháirc na Carraige Léithe sular mháirseáil siad isteach i gCath Dhroichead Shráid an Mhóta. Chomh maith leis sin, cuirfimid obair i láthair atá ar siúl ag mic léinn sna hábhair a leanas: Dearadh 3D, Déanamh Samhaltán agus Ealaín Dhigiteach a bhfuil léirshamhlú á dhéanamh acu ar an suíomh campála don chomóradh céad bliain.
