IADT announce agreement with DLR to expand campus to historic Carnegie Library Dún Laoghaire
IADT are delighted to announce the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding and License Agreement with Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, that will see the institute occupy the Carnegie Library and Library Road offices in Dún Laoghaire within the town of Dún Laoghaire.
David Smith, President, IADT remarked:
“I am delighted to sign the MOU and License agreements today. I would like to acknowledge the commitment and desire of the Council to support the Institute in our ambition to return to Dún Laoghaire town centre. The additional capacity of the historic Carnegie building will allow the Institute to grow national and international strategic projects of significant economic and cultural value for the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown region.”
“In signing the MOU, the Institute and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown recognise the rich potential for collaboration. This collaboration will shape and inform both organisations’ cultural, environmental, strategic and economic development. We are committed to sharing knowledge and expertise that will enrich and enhance the Dún Laoghaire region for our students and the wider Dún Laoghaire Rathdown community’s benefit.”
Speaking on the announcement, An Cathaoirleach Councillor Mary Hanafin said:
“The signing of this MOU and License agreement by Dlr and IADT for the use of the Carnegie Library and Library Road buildings is a hugely significant development and marks the beginning of a closer relationship between both organisations, toward integrating the college into the town of Dún Laoghaire. IADT is a world-renowned creative institute, which we very are proud to have in our jurisdiction. We are delighted to be able to work with the Institute to assist them to grow their footprint in the county, while also revitalising former landmark buildings such as the Carnegie Library, which we hope will breathe new life and vibrancy back into this area of the town.”
“Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) is Ireland’s only 3rd Level institute of art, design and technology with a specific focus on the creative cultural and technological sectors. From full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to accredited part-time courses, home of the National Film School, IADT has earned the reputation as Ireland’s national centre of excellence for the creative industries through consistently providing innovative, practical and professionally relevant programmes. The institute is currently home to over 2500 students, with plans to expand this to over 3000 in the coming years through integration into the town of Dún Laoghaire.”
Frank Curran, Chief Executive, DLR said:
“The agreements being signed today underpin the council’s commitment toward restoring vibrancy and footfall in the town of Dún Laoghaire. IADT is one of the country’s most significant higher educational institutions. While it has already been very successful from its campus on Kill Avenue, we believe that creating a base within the town itself, especially in a building with such historical significance as the Carnegie Library, presents a significant opportunity for both organisations to bring a new student dimension to the town. The addition of student activity on our streets will bring about increased footfall for businesses in the area, while giving the institute a platform to grow its student base and presence across the county.”
