Would you like to research or develop some aspect of animation teaching or education? Are you a graduate of an animation-related Level 8 programme ready to take the next step as an independent creative in the animation field?
IADT’s Masters in Animation will be delivered over three semesters (18 months). First students will commence in September 2024 (subject to final programme validation).
Animation in IADT
IADT’s undergraduate DL832 BA [Hons] in Animation programme enjoys a leading reputation in Ireland and across Europe, as a creative, innovative and student-centred study programme.
Now IADT is offering a Masters in Animation – closely linked to the strengths of our undergraduate programme and staff. IADT’s Masters in Animation programme is differentiated from other Masters programmes in offering students the opportunity to pursue a broad range of animation related projects. Students can develop Practice-Based animation projects, Practice-Led animation projects, Scholarly and Research Based animation projects or through Action-Research into the Teaching and Learning of Animation.
Students will have the opportunity to learn Masters research methods, to develop a Masters Animation project of their choice in collaboration with an enthusiastic programme team, with experts from the animation industry and animation education and with like-minded animation students.
Application Process Information
Project Topics
While topics are proposed and developed by the applicant, we have a broad range of supervisory expertise across our Animation programme team and our Faculty of Film, Art and Creative Technologies. We insist that each project proposal has a strong animation-related focus.
Eligibility
Applicants must normally hold a degree (2nd class honours) at NFQ Level 8 in a relevant discipline. It is possible for applications to be considered under the RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) process, providing the proposed projects have a determinedly animation-related focus.
Project Supervision
As part of the project propsal process, each applicant will identify a potential supervisor and co-supervisor (a list of eligible and available staff will be provided).
Application Process
Applications are accepted at any time in the academic year, but the programme will usually commence in September or January each year.
The first stage is to submit your expression of interest (a short form will be provided) to the Masters in Animation Programme team. Applicants may well submit a single, highly developed Project Proposal idea. However, we’d suggest applicants might consider submitting up to three shorter proposal ideas (less than one page each, can include images or video/animation links). Even seemingly highly developed proposals will be subject to modification and change as they’re developed.
Once this first application is reviewed, we’ll ask applicants to submit a research proposal and a Masters in Animation Project Proposal template form. Applicants will also provide a 2 minute motivational/pitch video, explaining the main points of their proposed project, what they hope to learn, and why they want to accomplish their animation project through IADT. The video can be a straight to-camera piece, could include some animation, etc.
Final entry decisions for the Masters in Animation programme will be made by the Head of Faculty.
