Moving Parts Project - Further Information
The ‘Moving Parts’ project was an inter-institutional collaboration between IADT, UCC Bystander Intervention, and NUIG’s Active* Consent project. From the outset, ‘Moving Parts’ was designed to create trauma-informed and survivor-led animated shorts on the themes of sexual consent, bystander intervention, and sexual violence and harassment (SVH).
The animations were designed and created by 3rd year IADT Animation undergraduate students, an IADT Animation Graduate, and an IADT Masters by Research student. The animators worked in self-directed creative teams and designed the visual responses in consultation with external stakeholders, including student survivors in UCC, and they created the animations guided by the inputs of experts, in this case, staff from IADT, UCC and NUIG.
Central to the concept of ‘Moving Parts’ was that IADT students would create original peer-to-peer content for students across the entire higher education sector in Ireland. As such, the campaign supports the national roll-out of the Consent Framework and the assets have been made freely available to all HEIs to support training initiatives in this area with students and staff.
‘Moving Parts’ was co-ordinated by the IADT EDI Office and the student animators worked very closely with IADT staff, Claire McGing (EDI Manager) and Rachel Skelly (EDI Administrator). Dr Charlotte McIvor and Alexandra Black were the NUIG Active* Consent leads and Dr Emer Clifford and Alana Daly Mulligan were the Bystander Intervention leads from UCC. The animation students were guided in their creative work by IADT lecturers Teemu Auersalo, Gary Blatchford, Jack O’Shea, and David Quin.
The animations were produced in English and Irish (with subtitles). The Irish-language animations were translated by UCC students and are especially ground-breaking, as they represent the first time that interactive resources exploring sexual consent and SVH have been made publicly available in the Irish language.
The ‘Moving Parts’ project commenced in October 2020 and the full suite of assets was launched by Minister Simon Harris TD in March 2022.
‘Moving Parts’ builds on several decades of socially-conscious student intellectual property creation as part of IADT Animation’s Year 3 Professional Practice module. Working in a very self-directed way, undergraduate student groups deal directly with NGO, Charity, Higher Education, and government agency clients to identify priority themes and subjects which need to be communicated professionally to specific target audiences, usually through short streamed or internet animated videos. Guided by client experts and by IADT lecturers, animation students learn to work sensitively to communicate difficult subjects, in a challenge-based learning model, with a determined focus on aspects of visual language and accurate messaging. Over the years, IADT have worked with clients as diverse as the National Rehabilitation Hospital, HeadsUp, JIGSAW, TENI, the Health Service Executive, TUSLA, Le Chéile Mentoring, RCSI, TCD, UCD, UCC, NUIG, and others.
In the coming years, IADT Animation Year 2 and Year 3 undergraduates will work on new challenge-based EDI and NGO projects with IADT postgraduate students, with diverse programmes across IADT, with the IADT EDI Office, with partner universities across Ireland and with our FILMEU partner institutions.
